James D. Wolfensohn
Chairman, World Bank Group
via email to feedback@www.worldbank.org
Dear Mr. Wolfensohn:
I am sending this email to you out of my concern for your immortal soul.
Your institution is systematically persecuting poor people throughout the
lesser-developed world. Because of the actions of your organization,
schools are closed, health care systems are dismantled, and there are
economic incentives to convert food production for domestic consumption
into cash crops for exports, including illegal drugs to feed the rich and
decadent western markets.
People go hungry because of your own personal greed and lust for power.
You and every employee of your banking group bear personal responsibility
for this situation before God and the "cry of the widow and the orphan"
ascends to heaven and accuses you of injustice.
If you were opposed to this systematic persecution of the poor, your
organization's policies would either change or you could resign in public
protest. Your decision to stay in your position of power and greed is a
public statement of your solidarity and preferential option for the rich
and powerful, and your disdain and racist hatred of the poor.
I have to wonder, what kind of a person steals from the food bowls of the poor
so that rich and powerful and white western bankers can receive interest payments
on top of interest payments? Do you have no conscience? Read the parable of the Prophet
Nathan to King David, about the rich man who stole a poor man's lamb to feed a guest.
You should be ashamed of yourself. You should come to an understanding of
the grief, and pain, and sorrow, and death that you are causing to so many
people. You -- and every employee of your bank -- should bow down to the
earth, consumed with grief at what you are doing to children -- children
who right now, even as I send you this letter, are dying of malnutrition
and disease because your bank demands payment of interest on interest.
But you do not turn away from this wickedness. You embrace it.
You are arrogant, rich, and proud.
Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, James D. Wolfensohn.
"A rich man who oppresses the poor is like a devastating rain that leaves
no food. Those who abandon the law praise the wicked man, but those who
keep the law war against him. Evil men understand nothing of justice, but
those who seek the Lord understand all. Better a poor man who walks in his
integrity than he who is crooked in his ways and rich. He who keeps the
law is a wise son, but the gluttons' companion disgraces his father. He
who increases his wealth by interest and overcharge, gathers it for him who
is kind to the poor. . . The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but a poor
man who is intelligent sees through him. (Proverbs 28:3-8, 11)
"Sow not in the furrows of injustice, lest you harvest it sevenfold."
Sirach 7:3
"Those who shut their ears to the cry of the poor will themselves also
call, and not be heard." Proverbs 21:13
May Almighty God have mercy on your soul, because you have no mercy for the
poor.
