Readings: Deuteronomy 4:1, 5-9; Psalm 147; Matthew 5:17-19
Obedience -- everyone's favorite word, as long as we're talking about somebody else's obedience.
But it goes hand-in-hand with yesterday's big concepts of humility and reconciliation. To bring our lives into obedience to God's will requires humility, a willingness to accept that I the volitional autonomous human person do not see the entire picture. God's call is not always easy or convenient. It may go against the conventional wisdom of the secular era. People may talk. I might have to change some things that I am doing. Stop doing some things, start doing other things.
The obedience God is calling us to has been made pretty clear during the readings of this Lenten cycle. God, through inspiration of these holy Scriptures, and the Church, by its selection and arrangement of these readings, are sending us a clear and unmistakable message, a just law, a law of peace and reconciliation. The content of that law and message is feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, work for justice and be just in your personal relationships, live in peace, be reconciled with our neighbors, beware of religious and political hypocrisy, obey God's commandments, repent of our sin, change our ways. Do better. Practice virtue. Examine our consciences.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these
commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, unless your
righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of
heaven. Matthew 5:19-20
+ For all candidates and catechumens, that as they walk closer to the waters of life and the Table
of the Lord, they will be living examples of the blessings of obedience, we pray to the Lord.
+ Pick up some trash in a public place today and dispose of it properly.
